Sikki/Golden Grass Craft of Odisha

Orissa has a tradition of crafting objects from golden grass known as sikki which is found in swamp areas. This age-old craft requires very little capital and provides a steady source of income to the makers besides being eco-friendly and biodegradable.  The grass grows to a height of about 5-6 feet. It is collected by women of the village and it is split into two even strands. The women use their teeth to split each stem along its length. No material other than the grass is used in this craft. The tools used are scissors, measuring tape and needle. The needle helps to coil the grass.

Straw hats, trays, temple-shaped box, table mats, baskets, footwear, coasters and lampshade are some articles crafted by crafts people who alternate as farm labourers.

Traditionally the craft was limited within the state but presently it has reached the urban and contemporary markets. With the help of government organizations and voluntary groups crafts people have been introduced design development programs. The items crafted with sikki crafts are merchandised at handicraft emporium and different showrooms across the country.
