From Malay Kain ‘cloth material’ and gulong ‘rolled’. A variety patterned in loom and usually incorporated with gold thread. The term implies that they were exported in rolls. Manufactured on the coast and chiefly intended into Malay sarongs and Java  girdles (waistcloth).
