Enamelling

Enamelling is a decorative technique of firing a vitreous, glass like coating on to a metal surface. Enamels are a mixture of powdered glass and metal oxides, this mixture is carefully put on to the surface of a metal and fired. On firing enamels undergo chemical changes and form transparent, translucent, opaque and opalescent coatings on the metal surfaces. In India enamelling is commonly known as Minakari, it is also often combined with processes such as Kundan, filigree, bead work to create jewellery.
