Block Printing

Decoration of a fabric by means of a carved wooden block dipped in dye.

A hand printing process where cloth or paper is printed on using wooden blocks. First a design is either carved into a wooden block or a raised design is created using metal strips and pins. The raised area of the block is coated with ink, dye, bleach, mordant or other material, the block is then pressed onto the surface of cloth or paper to create patterns.
