Rough and robust baskets with square base and circular rim delicately made act as a stamp of authenticity of Assam and northeast. The craftsmen working with exporters introduced these nesting baskets for easy transportation and storage. The largest basket can accommodate set of 10 sizes of nesting baskets.
The basket is woven from bamboo splits. To give strength to the edge of the basket, a specific rim is made with several pair of thick bamboo splits which sandwich the upper part of the edge. The outer skin of the bamboo is used to make the rim of the basket which acts as an ornamental element since it ages differently from the rest of the basket. The utility characteristic of the closed weave construction and the smoothened surface is that it does not get entangled with its contents.
Bamboo nesting baskets are cost effective to transport Assam’s bamboo products to reach the far off markets within and outside India. A medium- sized basket call duli is cylindrical in shape and used for storage. They are made by professional bamboo craftsmen who also sell their ware in the weekly markets of Naibari. The knives used in the making of these baskets are a small knife and dao/ a bill hook knife.
