The women are provided stitching work on a piece-rate basis which they complete in their own homes in their own time, ranging from applique bedspreads and patchwork quits to shopping bags, cushion covers, oven gloves and soft toys. The products are marketed through regular WIT’s retails showrooms at Tardeo, Mahim and Panvel and through regular Sales organized in different parts of the country and abroad.
WIT has also been involved in producing high-quality food products including Marmalade, Jams, Chutneys, Pickles and Squashes which are distributed directly to a number of retail outlets all over India. Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the initial years, Kamila Tyabji, the under-Chairman, who started WIT with a donation of Rs. 10,000/- realized another long-cherised dream when a polytechnic, the WIT Centre, probably the only one of its kind in the whole of India, was opened in November 1983 about forty kilometers from
Mumbai.
At the Centre, now known as the Kamila Tyabji WIT Centre, women from the surrounding rural areas are trained in six employment-oriented courses. Block Printing and Screen Printing, Nursing, Catering, Balwadi Teachers Training and the making of Soft Toys. A Garden Restaurant at the Centre helps the catering students simulate real-life situations and a Balwadi for nursery children is a useful training ground for a Balwadi students. Almost a hundred students each year attend these courses which are not only conducted free of cost but in some
cases students are also paid a stipend.
In addition there are also production units at the Centre a stitching unit where women take homework and a food production unit where the foods are produced in a spacious well-equipped kitchen.
A Hostel building adjacent to the Centre at Panvel was constructed in 1990 to accommodate the students attending the courses as they found it extremely expensive and time consuming the commute to the Centre every day from far-flung villages.
Over the years, WIT has helped hundreds of women and has achieved a substantial annual turnover of exports to the U.K., Europe and Australia. WIT Foods have also been exported to the U.K. from 1995.
