The Museum was first set up in 1970 at Post Office Choumoni, Agartala. In September 2013 it shifted to Ujjayanta Palace which was constructed by then Manikya King Radha Kishore Manikya in the year 1901. Located in the capital town Agartala the collection is based on the cultural heritage and history of Tripura.

A historical, anthropological and ethnographic museum which has collections based on the history of Tripura and the cultural history of the North East. The museum is funded by and under the Higher Education Department of the Government of Tripura.

About the collection: There are approximately 1,300 artefacts including paintings, coins, sculpture. There are 16 galleries, which include 14 museum display galleries, two art galleries and two temporary exhibition galleries.
