Tuz

Paper

Tuz a type of birch tree, the bark of which (Bhurja) was used for writing manuscripts in north West India before paper was introduced. According to Al Biruni, it was used in sheets one yard long and as broad as the outstretched fingers of the hand. It is prepared in various ways. They oil and polish it, so as to make it hard and smooth, and they write on it. In this way it is similar to the libro de memorias mentioned in Cervantes Don Quixote and the Shakespeare’s Hamlet. both of which are varnished aids to reflection.
