Wood Carving of Meghalaya

Wood carving is the core of Meghalaya’s cottage industry. It is an ancient art form that originated in rural Meghalaya, especially around the Garo hills. Most examples of wood carving in Meghalaya can be found in the temples and shrines that span across the state. 

Because of the technological skills needed, Meghalaya wood carving has grown exponentially in its popularity. Wood carving was an art practised by the ancestors of Meghalaya. Many temples and shrines in Meghalaya have wooden sculptures. Toys, human figurines, replicas of Gods and Goddesses, prominent characters, saints and sages, horses, birds, and so on are among the Meghalaya wood carvings.
