AN INITIATIVE OF CRAFT REVIVAL TRUST.  Since 1999

Tibetans have been engaged in making woollen carpets since the early sixties, when they settled in Bylakuppe in Mysore district of Karnataka. Tibetan carpets are woven by continuous system of knots, also known as Tibetan knots. A rod is placed along the width and in front of the warp to create these knots.A knitting needle is passed through two warps and then once around the rod to create a loop. After finishing a row of loops, they are cut and hand brushed to form the pile. This gives the carpet a rich look and a ridged surface. Floor carpets and covers for table and chair are made with this technique. Tools required to make a Tibetan carpet are metal rod, wooden sticks, knitting needle and a pair of scissors. It is done on a vertical loom.

Motifs of dragon, checkerboard designs, tiger, lotus, eight auspicious symbols of Tibet and their religious motifs are crafted with colors of Buddhist iconography. Traditionally, carpets were made for monasteries. In Kushalnagar, which falls under Kodagu district of Karnataka, carpets are made for Namdroling Monastery. Vast part of production is now also utilized for export and tourism.
