Soapstone Carving of Karnataka

The state of Karnataka has several artisans practicing the craft of soapstone carving. The art of sculpturing in stone has been passed down over centuries from generation to generation in Hoysala, a smalI town in Karnataka. The unique technique mastered over the years makes it easy to identify stones on the basis of the sound they emit when beaten. The different uses are also made clear to the sculpture where he learns to use ‘male stones’ for sculpting gods, ‘female stones’ for goddesses, and ‘neutral stones’ for sculpturing objects. Rules pertaining to proportions, postures, and ornamentation laid down by the Dhyanashlokas are followed.

Intricate works of varied nature are produced by these craftspeople that are also coveted worldwide. Objects such as jewellery, rolling pin and base, mortar and pestle, idols of Mahavira and Shiva, frying pans/paniarchetti, small containers, jars etc. are created. This craftform has been into existence since ancient times. Soapstone is essentially an extremely delicate mineral comprising mostly of lac. The name is derived from its texture which is soapy. Idols carved out of soapstone can to this date be found in the Hoysala Temples of Belur and Halebid as well as the Jain site of Shravanabelagola.

The carving process consists of several steps where the stone is first cut at the quarry by men and the initial shaping is carried out at the site itself.A sketch of the proposed image is drawn on to the raw stone which has been cut in proportion. With the help of steel rods, mallets, chisels of varied sizes and files the rough stone is sculpted into a final image which is then smoothened with sandpaper and rubbed with coconut oil. The later stages involve significant participation from women and children who are responsible for finishing and polishing the article.
