Ryndia Silk of Meghalaya

METHOD OF PRODUCTION

The art of processing hand-spun Ryndia silk yarn has been cherished through generations, utilizing handmade tools steeped in tradition. this exquisite silk is challenging to reel and is meticulously carded and spun by skilled weavers in Meghalaya. The drafting of Ryndia silk fiber into yarn is a meticulous process performed entirely by hand using handmade tools by the skilled weavers of Ri- Bhoi.This process results in a thicker, more rustic looking handspun Ryndia silk yarn. · The process begins with the drafting of Ryndia silk fiber using ‘U Dieng Sop sai,’ a traditional tool employed by local weavers to collect cocoon cakes. The filaments are carefully pulled by hand and twisted using the thumb and index fingers, allowing the weavers to control and adjust the thickness of the yarn. · After drafting, the fibers are further pulled and twisted by hand using the Takli, a traditional drop spindle tool. This meticulous process enables weavers to fine-tune the yarn’s thickness as it is spun directly from the cocoon cakes. · Once the yarn is spun, it is transferred from the Takli to the Phri. The fiber is then wound onto the hwah in a crisscross pattern ensuring that when the yarn is removed, it forms a perfectly rounded skein. Ryndia silk, often referred to as “peace silk” or “ahimsa silk,” is produced ethically, allowing the pupa to emerge naturally from the cocoon. This compassionate method makes Ryndia silk a favored choice for those who prioritize animal welfare.

On average, Ryndia silk fibers are coarser and shorter compared to traditional mulberry silk fibers. They feature a textured and slightly nubby appearance, resembling wool to some extent. Ryndia Silk exhibits a range of lengths and diameters, varying based on factors such as the rearing conditions of the silkworms and the processing techniques employed.
