Organic cotton is produced using an environment friendly process without and synthetic chemical use. Practitioners of this craft are also found in Punjab. Currently growing successfully in many countries, the largest producers (as of 2007) are China, India and Turkey, with production in Africa taking place in at least 8 countries. With 2.5% of world land usage engaged in cotton farming using chemical fertilizers there is growing concern for the environment, pollution of water and air, residual chemicals in the fibre, shifting equilibrium of the ecosystem and decreased bio diversity, all leading to the development of the organic farming movement and ecological benefits of the organic cotton farming.
India shares a total cotton production of 22.3% making it the second largest producer of cotton after China, which leads by 27.1%. India also ranks second in the consumption of cotton, after China which has a cotton consumption of 40.4%.
