Mooda/ Rice Packaging of Karnataka

One of the major occupations of Karnataka is paddy cultivation. Innovation of local people has led to an unusual packaging called as mooda. Mooda is used for grain storage and transportation. Mooda is created by rice straw only, to store rice. Layers of twisted rice straws are drawn to form ropes coiled in such a way that one can’t figure out the beginning and end of ropes. One of the advantages of this sustainable packaging is that it is damage proof since it can only be opened by cutting through the layers with a sharp knife. Koithi i.e. a sickle is used to make a mooda.

Also, due to its thick packing it prevents attacks from rats and keeps the grain safe. It requires minimum external material and can easily be rolled. Due to its spherical shape, it can only contain a specific quantity. Such solutions adapted due to local conditions, which are highly functional and sustainable, are rarely celebrated as craft.
