Mekhela Chador of Assam

Mekhela Chador is a traditional attire worn by women in the Indian state of Assam. It is a two-piece garment consisting of a lower part called the Mekhela and an upper part called the Chador.

The Mekhela is a skirt-like garment made of two or three pieces of cloth that are woven together, measuring around 3 meters in length and 1 meter in width. It is draped around the waist and gathered at the front, creating pleats. The Chador is a long piece of cloth, measuring around 2.5 meters in length and 1 meter in width, that is draped over the head and shoulders, covering the upper body. The Chador is usually pinned to the blouse or top to hold it in place.

The Mekhela Chador is made from silk, and is decorated with intricate designs and patterns. It is worn with a blouse or top, and is often accompanied by traditional jewelry and accessories.
