Gomira Mask of West Bengal

The Gomira mask is a traditional handcrafted mask from the Gomira region of West Bengal, India. This region is located in the southern part of the state and encompasses several districts such as Bankura, Purulia, and West Midnapore. The Gomira community, who have been practicing this art for generations, create these masks by hand using locally available materials such as wood and bamboo.

During the festivals, the Gomira community members wear the wooden masks, perform various rituals, and enact plays based on myths and legends, accompanied by music and dance. The Gomira masks are an essential part of festivals, and their intricate designs and vibrant colors add to the festive atmosphere.

The Gomira wooden mask has a unique design, with a distinctive facial expression, often depicting gods, goddesses, or mythological characters. These masks are made in various sizes, with some as small as a palm and others as large as the entire body.
