Dolls and Toys of Manipur

Manipur’s dolls and toys craft embodies two distinct styles, each with its own materials and techniques. The first type incorporates paper, used clothes, satin fabrics, and intricate embroideries, resulting in relatively larger dolls that often portray replicas of traditional Manipuri female dancers. The focus here lies in skillful stitching and detailed embellishments, capturing the essence of the vibrant costumes and accessories. On the other hand, the second style involves crafting dolls from straw, mud, cloth, wire, and paint. This method starts with constructing a framework, followed by the application of intricate paintings and the addition of accessories. Notably, idols of Radha and Krishna, as well as representations of Manipuri soldiers, hunters, and dancers (both male and female), take center stage in this category.

Various raw materials contribute to the creation of these captivating products. Gum acts as an adhesive, firmly bonding different components together, while the art of embroidery adorns the dolls’ attire and accessories. In crafting colorful toys, wool of diverse hues is employed. These toy creations range from elephants and car hangings to charming small dolls. What makes Manipuri dolls and toys particularly captivating is their lively color palette, meticulous detailing, and embodiment of local cultural elements.
