Aadivasi Gudiya/Doll of Madhya Pradesh

Jhabua, a region in Madhya Pradesh, is renowned for its Adivasi Gudiya Shilp, a traditional doll-making craft practiced for generations by the Bhil and Bhilala tribes. These handcrafted dolls, adorned in vibrant tribal attire and ornaments, depict the lifestyle, traditions, and cultural ethos of the indigenous communities. Historically, dolls have been a medium of storytelling, representing tribal history and customs, with the craft seeing a revival in the 1960s to support tribal livelihoods. Made using fabric scraps, cotton, metal wires, clay, and beads, these dolls are crafted through meticulous processes involving stitching, stuffing, molding, and painting. Female dolls wear Galsan Mala (bead necklace), Chaandi ki Hansli (silver necklace), and Kadas (bangles), while male dolls don Dhoti-Kurta and carry traditional tools. Though primarily sold in handicraft bazaars and emporiums, their demand fluctuates, with festivals like Bhagoriya Haat serving as key marketing platforms. Sustaining this craft is vital for preserving Jhabua’s artistic heritage and ensuring its continuation for future generations.
